About Me: My primary mission will be to guide readers in the quest to master their Apple gear. In addition, I’ll be reviewing accessories, gadgets and consumer electronics and providing commentary on the world of consumer technology. I began my career at the Richard Ivey Business School in Canada, transitioned to running the product management team at one of Canada’s largest financial technology companies and finished out office life as a senior research analyst. Along the way I got my Apple certification and began amassing cool gear. For the past decade I have been writing about technology-related subjects, contributing to outlets that include: Wired, InvestorPlace Media, MSN Money, Shaw Media, About.com and a weekly tech column in The Winnipeg Free Press. In addition I am the computing solution editor for Best Buy Canada’s Plug-in blog and one of the original writers for the award-winning GeekDad blog. The author is a Forbes contributor.

A flip clock screensaver for Windows and Mac OS X that tells the time against a black background in either a 12-hour or 24-hour format. Along with the format, the size of the old-fashioned flip clock can also be customized, from 25% to 125% of the original size.

The opinions expressed are those of the writer. Last year, I started noticing occasional issues with the Magic Mouse I use with a 2015, 13-inch MacBook Air. Everything would be fine for hours, then the Bluetooth connection would suddenly drop. After a few seconds it would usually reconnect on its own, but sometimes I would need to intervene and do it manually. I replaced the rechargeable batteries in the mouse, figuring that was the likely culprit. The system would go for days without a recurrence, then would drop the connection a dozen times in a day. Fresh batteries were eventually ruled out as the solution.

So was interference from other Macs nearby that were also using Bluetooth mice. I tried the usual Apple troubleshooting steps, including flipping Bluetooth on and off, restarting the computer, un-pairing and re-pairing the mouse and re-setting the SMC and PRAM. The operating system –MacOS Sierra– is completely up to date, so there were no easy wins to be had there.

Meanwhile, what had once been an annoyance was building up into something of an obsession. The randomly freezing mouse was interrupting my workflow at all the wrong times.

I was preparing to take things to a new level –deleting preference files– when I received a shipment of new Bluetooth mice from Logitech. This was a perfect opportunity to pinpoint the Magic Mouse and/or its preferences as being the root of the issue, except the Logitech mice both had the same problem of randomly losing the connection. Then I stumbled across a, outlining his exhaustively thorough troubleshooting process for a similar problem, that had escalated to the point of replacing a Mac’s Bluetooth hardware. Without solving the problem However, at the end of his post, he noted some readers had pinpointed Apple’s Handoff feature as the cause. I don’t use Handoff much, so turning it off wasn’t a concern.

And it worked. The Bluetooth connectivity issues that have plagued me for more than a year have been history ever since. The Apple Magic Mouse and the Logitech mice I am testing have been rock solid.

Changing one setting may finally fix your Mac Bluetooth connectivity troubles If your Mac’s Bluetooth connectivity to peripherals is flakey, it’s worth a try, only takes a few seconds, and doesn’t require any tinkering or messing around with system files. Simply open up your System Preferences, select General, look for a setting called Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices and make sure it’s un-checked. You lose the ability to start writing an e-mail on your iPhone then “hand it off” to automatically continue working on it in Mail on your Mac, but it might be worth sacrificing the feature to finally nail a maddening Bluetooth mouse problem. And it sure beats going back to a cord For more of my thoughts on technology, consumer electronics, Apple gear and everything else, follow me on.
